INPRISE RELEASES BORLAND JBUILDER 2
With JDK Switching and support for JFC/Swing components
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - May 4, 1998 - Inprise Corporation (NASDAQ:BORL) today announced the release of Borland JBuilder 2, a major new version of its award-winning family of comprehensive visual development tools for creating pure Java business
and database applications for the enterprise. JBuilder 2 enables corporations to
use the latest 100% Pure Java technologies, including JDK 1.1.6 and JFC/Swing
to rapidly create platform-independent business applications. The high-end flagship
version of the product, JBuilder 2 Client/Server Suite, includes support and tight
integration for multiple Java Development Kits (JDKs), application deployment, Enterprise
JavaBeans, Java Servlets, JFC/Swing components, CORBA and high-productivity coding Wizards.
JBuilder 2 is the latest addition to the company's Borland family of award-winning development
tools products.
"We are pleased to see that many large corporations are using JBuilder 2 to develop, deploy and manage the next generation of enterprise distributed applications for Java," said Zack Urlocker, vice president of marketing at Inprise Corporation.
"JBuilder 2 comes along at just the right moment in Java's evolution," said Evan Quinn, director of Java research at International Data Corporation. "As developers continually extend the boundaries of Java-based application development, support for multiple JDKs plus features to build highly distributed applications become a necessity rather than a nice-to-have."
The Borland JBuilder product family features fast and easy JavaBean
component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual "Two-Way"
development tools, and the ability to produce "100 percent Pure Java" platform-independent
applications, applets, servlets and JavaBeans. The product's open environment supports
JDK 1.1.x, JDK 1.2, JFC/Swing components, JavaBeans, Enterprise JavaBeans, CORBA, RMI,
JDBC and all major corporate database servers.
"Developers who want 100 percent Pure Java combined with a highly productive set of tools and flexible options, such as Java Development Kit (JDK) switching, will find Borland's Java integrated development environment right on the mark," said InfoWorld magazine in a March 23 product review.
A significant number of large corporations and government agencies worldwide are using JBuilder, including Volvo, Daiwa Securities, MicroAge, NationsBank, Ohio Department of Transportation, Eli Lilly, Nationwide Insurance, Mercedes Benz, Long Term Capital Management, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Manualife Financial, Chevron, Northern Telecom, Canadian Coast Guard, Kraft General Foods Canada, Xerox Canada, Novatel Communications, Crownlife Insurance Company, The Toronto Star Newspaper and Glaxo-Wellcome.
"Inprise provides software developers with productive, easy-to learn software development tools with JBuilder 2," said Michael Rozlog, a project manager for a Midwestern consulting company with Fortune 1000 clients. "Borland's encapsulation of JavaBeans, its drag and drop approach, and its ability to develop the business layer used for applications makes JBuilder 2 the ideal choice to write Java applications. JBuilder 2's JDK switching will let us use whatever version of the JDK we want, and that is extremely important because we can keep on the cutting edge with the latest Java capabilities."
Three versions of JBuilder 2
JBuilder 2 is available in three versions - JBuilder 2 Client/Server Suite, JBuilder 2 Professional,
and JBuilder 2 Standard. All of the new features described below are included in JBuilder 2 Client/Server Suite:
JDK Switching, which enables developers to compile and run their applications
against any Java Development Kit virtual machine (VM)-- from JDK 1.02 through JDK 1.2, and beyond.
JFC/Swing Component Integration, which promotes the creation of professional-looking,
full-featured, 100percent Pure Java user interfaces. In addition, JBuilder 2 includes a set of
enhanced JFC components that are fully JDBC data-aware, and leverages the JBuilder DataExpress architecture.
CodeInsight, a set of high-productivity coding Wizards to assist developers while
programming -- enabling them to build more robust applications faster.
The Inprise Deployment Server for Java, which enables corporations to safely and
reliably deploy and manage their Java applications.
Tighter CORBA integration with VisiBroker 3.2. For corporations developing
enterprise-scale distributed solutions, JBuilder provides a robust Java development
environment that is seamlessly integrated with the industry's leading object request
broker, Inprise's VisiBroker. The new JBuilder also offers a high level of integration
and support for RMI application development.
The Enterprise JavaBean Wizard automates the creation of Session and Entity Enterprise
JavaBeans, enabling developers to create reuseable enterprise components.
With the Java Servlet Wizard, JBuilder 2 developers can create dynamic, server-side
Java applications that integrate with Web servers.
JBuilder 2's pure Java DataStore offers optimized, high-performance data caching and
persistent client or server-side storage of data sets, objects and files.
BeanDesigners extend the power of JBuilder's BeansExpress facility for building and
customizing industry-standard JavaBean components. The new designers enable developers
to visually display, add, and edit JavaBean properties, events and methods.
BeanInsight provides a clear and easy-to-use analysis tool for diagnosing JavaBeans,
including information on valid properties, property editors and customizers.
